Gifts I made

I always enjoyed crocheting. Around the holidays it becomes stressful though. The pressure is on for gift giving and your body engine light is on for rest and unwind. But the doctor said I needed to make time to slow down and meditate and do something I enjoy, so off I went into the quest of doing something I loved but was also useful and productive because my brain cannot simply accept the idea of doing things just for fun.

I started with these lovely Christmas stars to give out to students as they brought me sweet Christmas gifts and literally made tons of them, so I started to use them as gift toppers as well. I wish I could remember where I got the pattern from, but it doesn't look like I saved it, which makes me sad as I want to make more even though I have plenty of them left. they were very well received, but if I had to do make them again, I'd probably double them and sew 2 of them together to give them a sturdier look. They also came out slightly bigger that I'd like.

Then I found this lovely tree potholder pattern, and I just fell in love with the simple both high end look. So here is a picture of a very happy friend that enjoyed her gift very much!

Halfway through making those, I realized I was running out of time and still have a few to make, so I switched to candy canes potholders.

These went way faster, and they were just as enjoyable and really helped me to get in the holiday spirit. I still have a few leftovers as I ended up making way too many as usual.

I love that everything I made was red, green and white, the traditional Christmas colors and made with eco-friendly cotton. Very different from the cupcakes I have been known for years back.

For the stars I went crazy and instead experimented with a lot of different colors and materials because why not?

But don't be fooled, these are not the only things I made and gifted. Some things are still in the making, and some others are still traveling, so I will definitely be posting more.

What about you? Are you a crafter of some kind? What did you make? Care to share? Go ahead and entertain me!

Snow

It's official! Winter in the south has definitely changed. January 29th 2014, first time we had snow in Florida in over 20 years.

Yesterday, it was such an horrible day for me. I woke up with a terrible muscle ache in my upper arm and couldn't figure out when or where I hurt myself.
Then, I got news that my grandmother, my mom's mom, passed away in the early hours of Italy time.

Here I am, hurting physically and emotionally, stuck in the house for a winter storm, road closed, screaming kids in the house......I so wanted a do-over!

But today, I woke up and there was white, fluffy stuff all around. It might be cold outside, but something melted inside me for sure.
I like to think that it's her, or a sign of her, snow all around, a way to tell me she's always around me even if I can't see her anymore.
Might be silly but I like to think of that.

Good bye grandma!
You never were the warm and fuzzy kind of grandma, but you did show your love to me, you thought me to be strong and I will never forget that. Fly away to you husband and to your child that you lost way to early, you were so strong to live until you were 90 years old, carrying inside you the burden to have lost at child when he was barely 20. I never met my uncle, but through you, I loved him just the same.
I can't imagine how hard that could have been for you, that's why I always squeezed you twice when I left your home. Once for me and once for the child you no longer had.
From you I take my green eyes, my dark brown hair that make me different from everyone in my family since that are all darker. I'm picky and have high standard just like you were and I'm proud of being like you.

The wedding

This post is so late that it's not even funny.

But here you go, pictures and memories of my brother's big day!

But let's back up a little and share some horrendous pictures of the preparations of the day before.

Do I need to comment on this one?? I think not!
What do you see here is me, my sister and my mom with ridiculous stuff on their heads, while my brother and my dad just look pretty!

But all was worth it because the next day I was able to sport with hair-do:

I think my mom and my sister looked very spiffy as well!!

What do you think??? Was the night before torture.....err prep, worth it?? I think, yes!

You know, we don't get to dress up a lot so I was trying to get some cute and romantic pictures of me and hubby together......

Well, I guess my husband had other plans! LOL

The kids were amazing. Can you imagine being little and going to a foreign country were you don't know anybody and don't speak the language?? Nonetheless, they were precious, well mannered and managed to make new friends!

And finally, the moment that everyone is waiting for, the picture with the groom and the bride!

I love, love, LOVE, my family!!!

imPRESS Broadway nails review

Do you remember my previous post about the Vox Box review from Influenster??
Well, if you don't simply scroll down and read it!
In the box there was a pretty package of fake nails from imPRESS that I didn't have quite the chance to use then and wanted to save for a special occasion.
Well, Wednesday was my birthday and I couldn't think of a better way to give myself a "treat".
The plan was to go to my usual mani place, but money and time really didn't allow that, why not try the Broadway nails instead??
I must confess 2 things before I proceed with this review.
First: I never EVER in my life used fake nails before so I didn't know what I was doing.
Second: I wasn't very fond of the design that I found in the box and was very skeptical about these nails.

That said, the night before my birthday I was in bed enjoying a movie and I thought I would give them a try.
As I said, I have no experience with fake nails so it took me a while to figure out that they came in different sizes and I had to kinda pick the ones that better fit my own nails.....let just say that it's a good thing that I started on my left hand, so any booboo were made there!!
As you can see, some of the nails I applied are slightly big for my hand but by the time I was working on my right hand, I had a better handle on it!
I found them very easy to put on, the instruction were written on the side of the package and basically all you have to do is peel the wrapper off and press on your nails.
I like the fact that the tab will tell you what part went on the bottom and what part what the tip, that helped me a lot!

They felt really strange on when I was all done, but decided to leave them on for the night, sleep with them and see I felt in the morning.

I must confess that dress up in the morning was a little awkward as they are a little longer of my real nail, plus I was afraid they will chip or come off. But they didn't!
Typing at the computer was also a challenge the very first day, but it's been 3 days now and I can honestly say that you get used to it and eventually re-train your movements to do your things with them on.

I'm a very busy person, working at a day care and with 2 children and a household to run, I figured that the first time I put my hands in the water or took a shower, they would come off, but they didn't. Truthfully, only one came off from my right thumb but I think I didn't apply it correctly to begin with. It's awesome that the kit comes with 24 pieces in it, just for these situations, so you can have a whole set for several days.
As I said I wasn't really fond of the design either.
I visited the imPRESS Broadway nails website and found so many other designs that I would have preferred to this one, mostly the simple and plain ones. I really couldn't figure out why I had the luck to receive the most fancy design and worried that it will look tacky on me!!! But I have to admit that they look pretty good instead and since they have a black and white scheme, they went well with all the outfits I changed in and  I think the little sparkle of glitter is more than appropriate for a summer look.

I'm very happy I got to try them and really impressed. Even if they won't last a whole week, I think it's a good product to have around for a special event when time is lacking and much cheaper of a manicure with plenty of wonderful choices.

June 25th: Little update! It's been a full week now and they are still on even tho I hand wash dishes on a regular basis! I might need to buy more of them!

Oath ceremony: February 22nd 2013

If you follow my blog, you already know that I was working towards my citizenship this past months and after some bumps on the road (like this!), finally the day came: February 22nd I officially became an American citizen!!

And I promised to share, so here are the pictures. Please be kind, I look rough! That's what happened when you drive for 2 hours in pouring rain freaking out about not making it in time for the big day!!

The first shot is when they passed the mic around and asked me my name and where I was coming from. Let me tell you: MOST.EMBARRASSING.MOMENT.EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate talking in front a big mass of people and the place was packed. Plus I hate talking in the mic. UGH!
Unfortunately I don't have a clear shot of me actually reciting the oath of allegiance, but after the ceremony (that lasted about 4-5 hours!!!), I took a shot with the judges presiding while I'm holding the so coveted certificate of citizenship.

I must admit I'm really proud of myself for finally made the decision and go through the process. Wasn't easy task, but was worth it and I think it gave me some more confidence in doing more things more myself (but that's for another blog posts!)

I also want to take the time and thank 2 very special online friends that supported me in this process. I talked about my friend Kayla at The Eclectic Element very often, she's very near and dear to me and she sent me the sweetest little package. But I want you to go look for yourself, in this lovely blog post the she dedicated to me: I'm American
I love love love the scarf, I put it on to go at work the next day!!! Here it is!
And the bracelet is simply adorable! I like especially the symbolism in it: it of course have red, white and blue beads to symbolize the American flag, plus some black beads for the Black history in the country (Martin Luther King Junior), a cross charm for our freedom of religion (some country are not so lucky, you know?) and a red heart for the love that moves everything in the universe. And, of course, it has "I'm American" hand stamped on it and I love it even more knowing that it's one of the first hand stamped pieced of Kayla. What an honor!!! LOVE.IT!
My pictures really don't do justice to this lovely gifts, so please, visit Kayla's blog for some eye candy!

Another friend, Gail, also warmed my heart with this lovely necklace!!
How can I NOT wearing it proudly? I have America in my heart!
