Galaxy press book review and giveaway! {3 winners}

Did I ever tell you how much I love collaborating with Galaxy press??
I get to read awesome books and then I can offer giveaways to my readers!
This time is not different.

I have been honored with received 3 titles from the author L. Ron Hubbard for Halloween and only now I'm getting around to post my reviews and giveaway because of computer troubles that kept me away for my beloved blog.

Reformatted the whole machine, lost pictures....I'm sure you get the picture and can sympathize!

But now I'm back with my reviews and a giveaway for you all with 3 winners! That's right! 3 lucky winners will get to win a book each! Which one will it be???? Hmmmm....

About the Author: L.Ron Hubbard was born March 13, 1911 in Tilden, Nebraska but spent his formative years in Montana. Son of a United States naval officer, by the age of 18 he had traveled over a quarter of a million miles around the world. Upon is return in American, he enrolled in the George Washington University and became an aviator. He kept traveling and writing about his discoveries but it wasn't until 1934 that he affirmed himself as pulp fiction publisher. Between 1934 and 1950, he wrote more that 15 million words of fiction in more than 200 classic publications under 15 other pseudonyms.

FEAR: Professor James Lowry didn’t believe in spirits, or witches, or demons. Not until a gentle spring evening when his hat disappeared, and suddenly he couldn’t remember the last four hours of his life. Now, the quiet university town of Atworthy is changing—slightly at first, then faster and more frighteningly each time he tries to remember. Lowry is pursued by a dark, secret evil that is turning his whole world against him while it whispers a warning from the shadows: If you find your hat you’ll find your four hours. If you find your four hours then you will die. . . .

My review: This is the first book I've read, I literally read it as soon as it came out of the package. Visually it caught my attention because the cover is different from the others book of L. Ron Hubbard, must be because it was probably one of the most recent works of this writer. Even Stephen King expressed his opinion about it, calling it "a classic tale of creeping, surreal menace and horror"....I had to find out how good was this book if the master of horror was so fascinated about it. And I can honestly say that the good reviews are totally right about it! The book starts like a ordinary book, then take a surreal, creepy and supernatural tone until the very last page when the extraordinary truth finally comes about. Up until the last page, you kinda scratch you head thinking: "Hmmm....where are we going with this??" You can't put it down until all of it makes sense. I think the suspense from this book is really entertaining and not even the final makes you hate the ordinary teacher James Lowry, even when the writers seems to try very hard to make you!

Carnival of Death: In the movie The Big Sleep, Bogart as Philip Marlowe follows a trail of decadence and murder on the dark side of L.A. But even that pales in comparison to the freak show found by undercover U.S. narcotics agent Bob Clark . . . in The Carnival of Death. Clark’s investigation begins with cocaine and leads to two headless corpses. Who is behind the slaughter? There are plenty of distractions—bright lights and beautiful girls—but Clark better find the murderers fast. Because the next head that rolls could be his own.

My review: This is the second book I read as the title intrigued me from the very beginning of my collaboration with galaxy Press, so I was able to finally have the chance to scratch that itch.
Although it has all the ingredient for a L.Ron Hubbard "classic" - the handsome, sentimental and always honest hero, the pretty girl, the mystery and suspence, the gruesome deaths - I must confess that I was a little disappointent is the story itself because I found hard to believe that one single law agent - one man - was able to solve a very intricate case without the help of anybody else. I mean, come on, even 50 years ago, which police officer would go by himself, without back up, and be able to gather and process forensic evidence and clues and run suspects interviews, get captured and escape all by himself, without stopping to eat and sleep???
I honestly found it hard to believe. So, a little artifact, but still a good story nonetheless.

Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead: Before Indiana Jones was even a gleam in Spielberg’s eye, one intrepid pilot flew out of the sky . . . into a bit of hell on earth. Captain Gordon is flying a team of anthropologists to the mountains of the Middle East in search of ancient history. But the discovery of a long-buried map leads to high adventure, untold treasure, and cold-blooded murder. . . .

My review: This was the last book I read and it's different from the other because rather than be one long novel, it was a collection of 3 different stories that had one thing in common: death and how the person telling the story escaped it while others weren't so lucky. The first story gives the title to the whole book and it's about a pilot that found himself in the middle of nowhere with some very greedy and dishonest archeologists and that will do anything to find a very antique treasure.....anything!
The story I mostly liked tho is "Price of a hat", a tale happened in old Russia that describe a peculiar way of communicating a message that unfortunately never arrives to the right destination.

$15 gift certificate giveaway from Crocheted Little Things

Well folks, Crocheted Little Things adventure is coming to an end.

I will always love to crochet, but truth is that as much fun as it is to have an online shop, it's not worth all the taxes and paper works that are necessary to keep this ship sailing.
Yes, I know that there are people out there that do it nonetheless, completely disregarding the law without the necessary permits, but it's not me.

I need to find something else, that "other thing" that I want to know when I "grow up" LOL

So my Artfire shop will officially close its doors on July 25th.
I have a "Liquidation" section with items ready to ship available at 50% discount.....Take a look

In the mean while, who says that we can't have fun until then??? Not me!

So here a giveaway all for you!

The giveaway: A lucky winner will receive a $15 gift certificate to spend in the Liquidation section ! With items discounted at 50% off, $15 goes a long way!

You must be 18 and older to enter this giveaway.

The Phantom Patrol: Review and giveway

I'm having the chance to read and review another book published by Galaxy Press , just like a did for The Iron Duke (HERE) and Dead Men Kill (HERE).
In my previous post, I also talked about the author, L.Ron Hubbard and briefly explained about gold Age pulp fictions.
But if you need to refresh your memory, here an informative video for you.
Synopses of The Phantom Patrol: (from book flap)
On the trail of dope runners on the high seas, Coast Guard CPO Johnny Trescott receives an SOS from a transport plan that's crashed and sinking. With lives at stake, Johnny must cut off his pursuit and rescue the downed plane.
Unfortunately, the dope-smuggling pirate he's chasing hears the same alarm, and greets Johnny and his crew at the crash scene with something far more than they bargained for.

My review:
I fell yet inlove with another of L.Ron Hubbard novel. As the previous ones I reviewed, there is everything is these pages: romance, thriller, action and justice with an happy ending. As the other books, I drink it up in one afternoon unable to put it down.
This one impressed me a little more about the descriptions of the surroundings as the story takes place on boats on the open sea and with the description on the storm on the very first chapter I could swear I was on the same boat with the characters getting sea-sick. A writer able to do that, needs my respects and L.Ron Hubbard certainly earned mine.
The characters are very credible and well described too.
You can't help but feel pure admiration for Johnny Trescott, for his strength and his high moral in doing what's right no matter what it might cost him. And through him, you literally can feel in your heart the same feeling he shares for Alicia, the unspoken but undoubted trust and respect they have for each other.
But what will a hero be without his loyal side kick, Heinie? His character is very pleasant, no pathetic as other side kicks in the other books I've read. He has a good heart and a good brain and, mostly importantly, helpful hands.
The villain of the story is pure evil which leaves very little to mystery and imagination, but it's still totally believable. And as every evil, he has no brain and no loyal friends, just scumbags submitted my fear.
I was skeptical of this book as I don't know much about boats or fishermen, that's why I left it for last as among all the titles it was the one that grabbed my attention the least, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Dead Men Kill: Review and giveway

I'm having the chance to read and review another book published by Galaxy Press , just like a did for The Iron Duke (HERE).

In my previous post, I also talked about the author, L.Ron Hubbard and briefly explained about gold Age pulp fictions.
But if you need to refresh your memory, here an informative video for you.

Synopses of Dead Men Kill: (from book flap)
When several of the city's most respected citizens are inexplicably killed by what appear to be zombies, all Detective Terry Lane has to go on is a blue-gray glove, a Haitian pharmacy bill for some very unusual drugs and a death threat from a mysterious stranger. Matters are soon complicated when a beautiful nightclub singer shows up who claims to have information that could solve the case, but whose motives are plainly suspect. Against his better judgement, Terry investigates her lead only to find himself sealed in a coffin en route to the next zombie murder - his own.

My review:
I was attracted by the title of this book, which is weird given that it has the word "kill" in it LOL
In my head the title echoed of recent TV shows, like "Supernatural" or "The Walking Dead" and I was spot on, with zombies and situations that cannot happen in real life, but will make you wonder....what if???

What I loved about this book was first and foremost the pagination, as it was divided in chapters instead of being a one piece novel like "The Iron Duke" and that made it easier for me to take breaks.

That said, it was very easy to read in a whole afternoon. I couldn't put it down as I love mystery books like this and I wanted to "solve" it.

The main character, Detective Terry Lane, is kind, handsome and very strong. Picture Dean of Supernatural, smoking hot, but with the kid heart of Sam (from the beginning of the show anyway)
He's a good man, always trying to do the right thing by every one, but I find him also a bit too naive at times, making me scream: "Really??? And you fell for that???" right at the book, like he could really hear me now. (My husband thought I was hilarious)

Then there is the beautiful and mysterious nightclub dancer, Dawn Drayden, that really confuses and fascinate both the reader and poor Detective Lane. She's also a character full of surprises that leave the readers breathless with.every.single.action! Until the very end!

If I had to find a flaw about this book it will be that I saw right through the plot from the very beginning. Now mind you, it could be because I love mystery books and read a lot of them, so I was able to pick up little hints here or there of who the stranger villain would be.....and found out I was totally right.

In this respect, I think that if there is a lesson to be taken from the novel, it will be to keep your friends close and keep your enemies even closer because you'll never know at any given time, who's after you and what their motives might be. But also it made me think about not being so paranoid about every little thing all the time, because troubles struck when you least expect it. The important thing is not to give up hope and use all the resources available to get out of a dangerous situation.

MilkAndHoneyNaturals GIVEAWAY

Summer is definitely arrived in the Pan Handle of Florida and with the school almost over, me and the kid LOVE to spend time outside.
But with the summer, the annoying mosquitoes and various bugs also arrived and they seemed to have fun feasting on me and my children (my daughter especially), even after applications of store bought repellants :(

Citronella Cream Solid Lotion Repellent by MilkAndHoneyNaturals

I'm not going to have the little buggers spoiling our fun tho, I just went bug repellant shopping and with the help of another blogger, Miss Val's Creations, I fell right on MilkAndHoneyNaturals on Etsy and her solid bar repellants.

I loved the idea of the solid bar instead of the store-bought spray that with young kids is gonna end up into their eyes, clothes and what not, but never everywhere on the skin, leaving few "vulnerable" spots.

We now have the wonderful habit to relax sitting on the chairs in our garage, letting the bar melt a little in our hands while we talk about our day and then lather our self us and smell the lovely citronella :)

No more little bugs bothering us, bring on the fun!!!!!

Wanna have fun too?? I hope so because you might be the lucky person to win one of those bars!!!

{The giveaway}
Winner will receive 1 Citronella Cream Solid Lotion Repellent Valued at $6 from MilkAndHoneyNaturals

{The rules}
Use the rafflecopter form below. The first 2 entries are mandatory: You must leave me an email to reach you in case you win AND visit MilkAndHoneyNaturals to tell me which item from her shop is your favorite .
Open WORLDWIDE

The giveaway will last 2 weeks and will end May, 31th. Winner will be picked through Rafflecopter and contacted on June 1st. Winner will have 72 hours to answer the email and claim the prize.
